Installation steps for the FXRT-Style Cowl Kit (XL / Dyna / Street Bob) - from fitting to drilling and final tightening
Installation steps for the FXRT-Style Cowl Kit. Using an XL as the example, we explain in 12 steps how to loosely mount the brackets, fit the cowl and drill holes, secure the screen and light unit, and do the final tightening.

- Order for loosely mounting the cowl body bracket, base bracket and light mounting bracket
- Key points for fitting, checking for interference and drilling
- Supplied parts by model (XL / Dyna / Street Bob)
The FXRT-Style Cowl Kit lets you fit an FXRT-style fairing to the Harley-Davidson XL (Sportster), Dyna and FXBB Street Bob. Dedicated base brackets and cowl body brackets are provided for each model.
This page uses an XL as the example to show the installation process. The Dyna and Street Bob versions follow basically the same steps. Because this product assumes fitting and modification, be sure to read the warnings before starting.
01 Warnings before you start
Always check the fit, carry out any modifications needed for installation, and confirm the fit on the actual bike before painting.
This product is intended to be installed with modification even if installation proves difficult. Please read all the other notes on the product page before starting the installation.
These instructions use an XL as the example, but the Dyna and Street Bob versions follow basically the same steps.

03 Loosely mounting the brackets (steps 1-4)
-
Loosely mount the supplied Cowl body bracket on the bike. This bracket is used to secure the cowl body on the left and right.

-
Loosely mount the supplied Base bracket to the tank mounting bolts. The plate with the hole serves as a viewing window for the frame number. This bracket is the base for the light mounting bracket.

-
For the Dyna version, loosely mount the bracket by hooking it over the neck as shown in the photo.

-
To the base bracket installed in step 2, connect the Light mounting bracket (see photo) and mount it loosely.

04 Fitting the cowl (steps 5-8)
-
Test-fit the cowl. While fitting, confirm that the cowl and the mounting bracket line up as shown in the photo.

-
Attach the light unit mounting bracket with bolts and determine its position. While adjusting the overall balance, drill the cowl body at the position of the lower bracket (5) and mount it loosely.

-
In the mounted position, turn the handlebar fully left and right and check for interference between the forks and the brackets.

-
Apply the supplied protective pads where the forks and brackets make contact.

05 Installing the screen and light unit (steps 9-12)
-
Fit the screen to the cowl, adjust it so the bolt holes line up, and drill the holes.

-
Do the same for the screen at the light: adjust it so the bolt holes line up, and drill the holes.

-
Attach the mounting plate to the light unit.

-
Secure the light unit with the plate attached to the cowl.

Finally, do the final tightening of the bolts while checking and adjusting the position of the cowl. If you fully tighten each part from the start, the positions will not line up.
After final tightening, be sure to check that everything is tight and that the forks, brackets and wiring do not interfere when you turn the handlebar fully left and right.
