Customizing a License Holder with Your Own Design: Making and Fitting the Insert
The license holder is a classic easy custom. Here's how to make your own design for the insert and create a one-of-a-kind holder, along with dimensions and steps for disassembly and installation.

- How to determine the size of the insert design
- How to disassemble the license holder and fit the insert
- Choosing where to mount it on the bike
The license holder is a classic small custom. You could look for a ready-made sticker to put inside, but it's fun to make your own design while you're at it.
All you need is a printed sheet of paper, the license holder and a few simple tools. Your own original piece comes together more easily than you'd think.
01 Deciding the size of the design

The visible part on the front is 63mm in diameter, and the waterproof rubber is 79mm. To match the diameter of the clear acrylic disc inside, make the design 75mm in diameter and it will fit just right.
02 Creating and printing the design
-
Place your design within a 75mm circle.

-
Arrange the layout and finish the design.

-
Print it on glossy paper.

-
Cut it out along the circle with scissors, and the design is ready.

Even without making your own, any sticker or backing card about 70-75mm in diameter can be fitted the same way.
03 Fitting it into the license holder
-
With your design at hand, get ready to take apart the license holder.

-
Insert a thin flat-head screwdriver into the gap in the rim on the back of the license holder and gently pry, and the rim comes off.

-
Sandwich the design behind the clear acrylic, put the waterproof rubber back over it, and reassemble. That's it.

04 Mounting it on the bike

It's usually mounted together with a front fork bolt. But you're free to mount it anywhere it can be secured with a bolt.

Customizing includes plenty of easy projects like this. Give it a try.
