Try a Hairline Finish: Changing the Texture with Scotch-Brite
A hairline finish creates a subdued sheen by polishing in fine lines. Here's how to change the texture of chrome-plated parts with nothing more than a single Scotch-Brite pad.

- What a hairline finish is
- How parts look with and without a hairline finish
- How to rub for an even finish
A hairline finish is a pattern of long, fine lines polished in to enhance a product's appearance. It produces a unique sheen that changes with the light.
Applied to handlebars, levers, headlight rims, muffler covers and the like, it can give even steel chrome parts a stainless-like texture for a more understated overall look.
01 With and without a hairline finish

That's not to say a hairline finish is always better. Mirror-finish chrome has its own appeal. Decide whether to apply it based on your bike's theme, look and your own taste.
02 All you need is Scotch-Brite

All you need for a hairline finish is Scotch-Brite (a non-woven abrasive pad), easily found at hardware stores. No special tools are required.
03 How to apply a hairline finish
-
Hold the Scotch-Brite against the area you want to finish.

-
Patiently rub back and forth in one consistent direction.

-
When even lines cover the whole surface, it's done.

If the direction of the lines varies, the finish will look blotchy. Always rub in the same direction. Removing parts that can be removed before working makes an even finish easier.
