Installing the XL-FT Twin Hammer Full EX (Sportster): From the Dedicated Bracket to the Silencer
Installation steps for the XL-FT Twin Hammer Full Exhaust for the Sportster. Photos walk you through fitting the dedicated bracket, relocating the O2 sensors and flanges, loosely fitting and final-tightening the header pipes and silencers, and precautions for the first start-up.

- Installing the dedicated bracket, and watching the shifter rod position
- Relocating the O2 sensors and flanges, and loosely fitting the header pipes
- Installing the silencers and springs, and checks before final tightening
The XL-FT Twin Hammer Full Exhaust is a full exhaust system for the Harley-Davidson Sportster. It comes in two finishes, black and hairline, each available for '04-'06, '07-'13, and '14-'22 models (GW-4048 to GW-4053).
This article shows how to first install the dedicated bracket on the bike, then assemble the header pipes and silencers. The order of loose fitting and final tightening affects the finished result, so follow the steps as written.
01 Installing the dedicated bracket
-
Remove the stock muffler and bracket.

-
Remove the stock footpeg bracket.

-
Remove the sprocket cover.

-
Install the bracket using the stock bolts. On models up to '13, pay attention to the shifter rod position: the rod should come out between the bracket arms.

- Use threadlocker on the bolts. Also, when you tighten the bolts down, loosely fit the 1/4-20 bolt as well. Setting its position here makes it easy to install the bolt when you put the sprocket cover back on.
-
Reinstall the sprocket cover. Use threadlocker here as well.

-
Reinstall the footpeg bracket.

-
That completes the bracket installation.

02 Installing the header pipes
-
Transfer the O2 sensors, flanges, and other parts from the stock muffler to the header pipes of the FT muffler.

-
Secure the O2 sensors firmly, and transfer the flanges from the stock header pipes as well.

-
Install the header pipes on the bike.

-
Leave both front and rear loosely fitted for now. Also watch the routing of the O2 sensor wires.

When installing the O2 sensors, apply an anti-seize such as thread compound to the threads.
03 Installing the silencers
-
Next, install the silencers. Starting with the lower silencer makes the job easier.

-
Attach the included bolts to the silencer.

-
Mount it to the bracket. Keep it loosely fitted for now.

-
Install the springs. Using a zip tie during installation helps prevent scratches.

-
Install the other side the same way.

-
Use a cloth or similar to avoid scratches.

-
Once installed, check that the mufflers don't touch the frame and that the silencers are seated evenly, then tighten everything down.

-
Reconnect the O2 sensor couplers.

-
When installation is complete, wipe everything clean with a soft cloth so no fingerprints or dirt remain, then start the engine.

04 Checks at first start-up and after riding
The first time you start the engine after installation, the muffler may smoke. This is caused by heat curing the paint and is only temporary. It will stop on its own after a while, so there's no need to worry.
After riding, re-check and retighten all fasteners.
Use threadlocker as needed during installation. Explanations of tools and general wiring work are omitted. Minor adjustments or workarounds may be needed due to individual differences between bikes.
